So far it is saving us a LOT of money
First, I am an almost 84 year old woman with minor “handyman” skills. I looked over the instructions several times, and also found a video on You Tube and viewed that. I was able to install this unit, after removing our Honeywell unit, with very little trouble. Originally, our “R” wire did not show up, so I had to take off the cover, pull out that wire, make sure it was straight and inserted firmly, and that brought success. Admittedly, it was made easier because all our wires were color coded to match the letter they had, and we had every wire we needed.The one thing I wished was that I had brought some really good “VHB” double faced tape home, and put the backer plate on with that. Our drywall is so old that the screws just rattled around. I was able to fix it with tape for the time being, but I think at some point I’ll need to remove it and reinstall the backplate more firmly with better tape. So — have no fear! I did turn off my main electrical switch just in case but other than that, just about anyone should be able to install this unit.After we got air conditioning, our Honeywell thermostat started to malfunction, and the furnace would turn on and would not turn off. Our gas bill went through the roof — about $180 when it is normally, in winter, about $60.00. I wish I would have ordered this a month ago, but I didn’t realize what the bill would be like! Obviously, the savings would have paid for the new thermostat. All that said, we all love this thermostat! It looks nice, and when you get close, you know what the temperature is. You can easily set it, and everything responds almost immediately. Our furnace has barely gone on at all, and yet it is comfortable (we are having a reasonably warm spell — not uncommon here in Southern Cal.)

Another homerun by Nest
As a longtime user of the 1st generation Nest, I’m a believer. I recently ‘upgraded’ to the Ecobee 3 (for HomeKit) but am not a fan of the user interface and build quality. When I saw the Nest thermostat E, I thought I’d give it a try. My concern was the build quality as this is plastic.However, seeing and touching it in person wiped that concern away. The plastic has a ceramic like coating that makes this feel very nice. The look is a bit space age meets modern, in my opinion. It blends in; I can’t wait to see it once our walls are painted a soft gray (soon).In case you are wondering (I was, based on pictures) the Nest logo doesn’t jut out from the front of the display. It’s sort of etched into the glass. I attached a picture, hopefully it helps.Setup and installation is a breeze. I expect this Nest will serve us well in continuing to save money on heating and cooling. My 1st gen has paid for itself several times over.As I said, I’ve been a fan of Nest for awhile, I have two Nest Cams and a Nest Protect. I love the look of this installed, it feels nice. It has basically the same functions of the higher priced Nest, it works with Alexa and the Nest app has always been simple and useful, very unlike the Ecobee.In summary, if you’d like to potentially save money on heating and cooling, Nest is the original and frankly, still the best in my opinion. If you’re a long time user of Nest and thinking of upgrading, I think you’ll like this. I certainly do.

AVOID ANY NEST PRODUCT AT ALL COST
UPDATE: My original review was glowing, but i retract it all. DO NOT BUY NEST PRODUCTS. After a mere 6 months this POS has stopped working. We had an HVAC person come out and check everything out to find out our ac system is fine, it’s the thermostat that’s the problem. I’ve been BATTLING google for WEEKS about the warranty replacement. I’ve been lead in circles, asked the same gd questions over and over again. I’ve explained so many times that we have already had a company check everything and tell us it’s the thermostat, but they keep trying to make us “reboot” and “rewire” things. I’ve sent photos to prove that it won’t even turn on. We even plugged in our old school Honeywell and the ac magically fixed itself (it didn’t, it was always working, the nest is just crap). Now the thermostat won’t even turn on at all- even if we charge it with a wall charger. They had a “senior” person reach out to me who has done absolutely nothing. The only way you can contact them rn is Facebook or email, and frankly good luck with that because they’re totally useless. I will never buy another google product again. The customer support has ZERO desire to help you, despite the fact that their product is faulty.******* ******* ******* ******* ******* ******* *******This was one of the best amazon purchases I’ve made! Super easy to install, super easy to use, and it’s fun connecting with Alexa so you can tell her to adjust the temp! It learns your preferences and makes a schedule based on them. In the winter I crank it down during the day and turn the heat up at night but I don’t even have to touch it anymore since Nest does it for me. You can easily adjust the temp from your phone too if you’re away from home. The nest also knows if you’re home or not and can go into “eco” mode if you prefer, which can save energy. Lastly, I love the simple design! Looks better on our wall than the previous thermostat! Def recommend!
